Read the blog - then share how you engage your students with local ecology, biodiversity or sustainability projects in the Teaching 11-19 Science group.

The Natural History Museum (NHM) has launched an exciting project to help you to engage students in youth advocacy for urban nature and sustainability.

Join in for free Explore: Urban Nature

You will hear directly from scientists at the Natural History Museum about latest urban nature scientific research developments, visit your local museum to practice field skills and find out how you can continue to work with them, design an action plan to confidently run an outdoor urban nature investigation with your students on or near your school site.

Not close to a museum? Don’t worry! There are many ways for your students to take part remotely, from CREST awards to an EcoSchools challenge and more.

  • January - February: free, remotely-delivered teacher training.
Take part in Explore: Urban Nature teacher training programme to gain practical skills for outdoor STEM investigations into urban nature, meet your local museum researchers and hear about the latest research. Pre-course activities and introductions from 24th January onwards, first live webinar 8th Feb to start the course
  • March - July: Take part in a museum workshop near you.
Bring your students to hands-on outdoor workshops where they will work scientifically to investigate challenges facing urban nature.
  • July: Join a museum celebration day.
Students can join the end of year celebrations to share their investigations and meet the experts.

“Wildlife is in trouble in the UK. The natural world faces unprecedented declines and needs help now more than ever. We particularly need to understand and protect the nature in our cities, so monitoring its changes is vital.

Everyone can play a part in giving nature a helping hand, so we're working to give people across the UK, no matter who they are or where they live, the motivation and tools to safeguard the nature in towns and cities so that people and planet can thrive.” Natural History Museum

The NHM is looking for their next big urban nature research question and they want to know what students across the country think it should be. Help your students engage in the scientific process by supporting them to come up with scientific questions that they think are important.   The Natural History Museum will use their ideas to launch a brand-new Citizen Science project that they will be asking everyone across the U.K. to contribute to next year.   Find out more on the Natural History Museum website:  Urban Nature Programme
