On Wednesday 14 December the #GCHQChristmasChallenge will return for its second year! Once again the annual Christmas card, sent by Director GCHQ Sir Jeremy Fleming, is packed full of puzzles which have been designed specifically for 11 to 18-year-olds. For 2022, there’s an added twist!

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to crack all the puzzles to uncover our hidden festive message.

Secondary schools and colleges can register for a resource pack by following the details at the bottom of this page. Packs will be sent on Monday 12 December to help you prepare for the Challenge on Wednesday 14 December.

Resource packs will include:

  • A printable version of the Challenge. Students are also invited to take the challenge home to test their households!
  • A special good luck video from Director GCHQ, Sir Jeremy Fleming.
  • A hints sheet for teachers to help guide students towards the answers.
  • Printable certificates for both schools and students.
  • Details of how to get involved on social media on 14 December.

Secondary schools and colleges can register by emailing xmaschallenge@gchq.gov.uk. Please provide your name, school/college and location and we’ll be in touch with your resource packs on Monday 12 December ahead of the GCHQ Christmas Challenge taking place on Wednesday 14 December.

The GCHQ Christmas Challenge also features in our secondary Advent Calendar - check it out here!

Thanks for sharing Steve. I'm going to be trying out some of the challenges on the card with family & friends when they've had enough of the turkey and mince pies!
