Discussion of the week (Secondary): STEM School trips

By Tim Bradbury posted 21-05-2021 15:20

As the nation continues to come out of lockdown and a sense of normality begins to return, we can all start to think about some of the activities which enrich the whole curriculum, school trips being a great example.  In this discussion @Rosalind Jack asks the questions:
  • What are the best STEM trips you've done in recent years?
  • Any ideas for great STEM school trips that do good workshops?
  • How do you select students for them?

I have many fond memories of school trip when I was MUCH younger... Visits to the Science Museum were always great, I also remember a wonderful A-Level physics trip to @bristol (is that still there I wonder? Checks google).

Thanks to @Nicola Morris, @Claire Tinney, @Sarah Longshaw, @Adam Little, @Matthew King and @Jon Hale

If you have any ideas for trips and visits that have worked well for you in the past please share them on the discussion located here.

The best related STEM trip did I organised was a Sky Academy Technology day. Students had the opportunity to work in teams to build an Formula 1 for Sky Sports. One of the best trips that I have organised in 2016 at my previous school.

Another trip that I organised was a TechGirls workshop at UCL to encourage young women to consider a career in tech by learning about quantum mechanics, programming and careers in the STEM / tech field in 2019.

I did the physics Thorpe Park trip when I was at school! I remember enjoying it, but I think we did spend most of the day just going on rides.

This was about 12 years ago though so I expect it's been changed a lot since then!

I had a trip to the Euro Space centre in Belgium booked for May 2021 which I have been able to reschedule for May 2022. This is a great facility and not too expensive for a European trip.

Within the UK, as I am based in South London, we regularly go to the Science Museum (which does a good job of trying to stay modern) and the Natural History Museum.

Has anyone ever done the school (Physics) visit to Thorpe Park? If yes, would you recommend it?
