Apprenticeships are key to unlocking our 'science superpower'

Further to @David Thorpe's blog (click here), I read an interesting article published today in Schools Week.  Following PM's announcement during the Conservative Party conference a few weeks ago, outlining a vision of the UK as a "science superpower", a global leader in exploration and innovation, 'Schools must value and recommend apprenticeships if we are ever to become a 'science superpower'.

Does the structure of the academic year put off/restrict students access to high quality apprenticeships?

Are schools doing enough to raise awareness of technical/apprenticeship employment routes from age 11, or is the STEM lean still heavily towards university?
