๐ŸŽ‰ Happy New Year to all our STEM Community members! ๐ŸŒŸ As 2025 begins, we're thrilled to share an exciting opportunity to engage with nature and contribute to important scientific research. ๐ŸŒธ The Signs of Spring Survey 2025 is here, and we invite you to be part of this national effort to track the arrival of spring across the UK.

This year, the Royal Society of Biology, in collaboration with the Field Studies Council, is calling on individuals, families, schools, and communities to spot and record ๐ŸŒฟ ten key signs of spring ๐ŸŒผ:

  • ๐ŸŒธ Bluebells

  • ๐Ÿ Bumblebees

  • ๐Ÿฆ‹ Butterflies

  • ๐ŸŒผ Daffodils

  • ๐Ÿž Damselflies and Dragonflies

  • ๐Ÿธ Frog spawn

  • ๐ŸŒฐ Hazel catkins

  • ๐Ÿž Ladybirds

  • โ„๏ธ Snowdrops

  • โœ‚๏ธ The first cut of the lawn

How to Take Part

๐ŸŒŸ Participating is simple and rewarding. As the year progresses, keep an eye out for these signs of spring in your local area. When you spot one, record the following details:

  • What you saw

  • When you saw it

  • Where you saw it

  • Weather conditions at the time

The survey will remain open until 18th June 2025, giving you plenty of time to contribute your sightings. Your data will help researchers track springโ€™s progress and compare this yearโ€™s findings with previous years, offering valuable insights into seasonal changes and their potential links to environmental factors.

Get Involved

Whether youโ€™re a teacher, a parent, or simply someone who loves the outdoors, this survey is a fantastic way to engage with nature and support citizen science. Please consider sharing this initiative with your friends, family, and networks. Every record counts and helps build a clearer picture of springโ€™s arrival across the country.

Together, we can make 2025 a record-breaking year for spring observations. Visit the Royal Society of Biology or Field Studies Council websites to learn more and get started with the Signs of Spring Survey 2025. Letโ€™s celebrate the season and contribute to vital research that benefits us all.

๐ŸŒผ Happy spotting! ๐Ÿ

Thank you for highlighting @Tim Bradbury and what a great way to encourage young people to become citizen scientists!

Might this provide an opportunity for pupils to become involved in data collection within this citizen science project?  Raising their awareness of the process of science and the significance of observing events, recording them and providing raw material for analysis?

Homework? Science club? Encouraging participation?

Be reminded of the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 2025 which already has more than 200,00 participants registered.
