The Department for Education (DfE) has just launched an exciting new opportunity for schools and colleges across England to help shape the future of education technology, introducing the EdTech Impact Testbed Pilot.

If you're looking to explore innovative teaching tools, reduce staff workload, or boost pupil outcomes, this pilot could be a fantastic opportunity for your setting.

What is the EdTech Impact Testbed Pilot?

Put simply, a “testbed” is a controlled environment where new technologies are trialled and evaluated in real-world settings. This 9-month pilot will provide selected institutions with free access to promising EdTech tools, alongside structured evaluation to understand what really works in classrooms and colleges.

The pilot includes a 6–12 week testing period with additional light-touch monitoring, and it's open to:

  • All primary and secondary schools

  • SEN (Special Educational Needs) schools

  • All further education providers

Why Get Involved?

This isn’t just about trying shiny new apps. The DfE is investing over £1 million in this pilot to build robust evidence on which EdTech tools actually deliver impact—so that schools and colleges can make better, evidence-informed choices.

As a participating institution, you’ll benefit from:

  • Free access to cutting-edge EdTech tools
  • Professional development and support for staff
  • Networking and collaboration opportunities
  • A chance to shape how EdTech is evaluated in future

You’ll also be contributing to the broader goal of improving inclusion for pupils with SEND, reducing teacher and admin workload, and enhancing pupil outcomes through smart use of technology.

How to Apply

All you need to do is submit an expression of interest by 8th August.

The short questionnaire will ask for:

  • A quick summary of your setting and current tech use

  • A short statement on why you’d like to be involved

If selected, you’ll be part of a supportive national pilot helping shape the future of teaching and learning. Even if you’re not chosen this time, you may be invited to participate in future opportunities or help support ongoing research.
