πŸ“£ Calling all A level Biology teachers!

Dr Judith Wayte from the School of Biosciences at the University of Nottingham is inviting your insight and feedback to help shape an exciting new outreach programme for Year 12 students. This initiative focuses on the fascinating and often underappreciated field of Food Science and Nutrition. It aims to highlight how biology is applied in real-world contexts, and your input can help ensure its success.

Why Food Science and Nutrition?

Food Science and Nutrition is a degree course with excellent employability outcomes. However, many students are not aware of it or do not realise how science-rich and hands-on it is. Judith, whose role centres on student employability and industry experience, is passionate about showing young people the real-world potential of biology beyond the classroom.

This online outreach programme will:

  • Showcase key A level Biology concepts in applied settings.

  • Introduce students to food science careers.

  • Offer a meaningful experience that students can reference in their UCAS personal statements.

  • Include question and answer sessions with current undergraduates to provide insight into university life.

Planned Programme Highlights

The team is currently developing the content and would love your feedback on the proposed structure. The programme is scheduled to run between October and December 2025 and is set to include four themed sessions:

Content Focus A level Biology Link
Sugars, fats, and mouthfeel Biological molecules, including lipids and carbohydrates
Cheese-making and oat milks Enzymes and their conditions, including temperature and pH
Insect protein and sustainability Protein structure and function
Alternative meats and stem cells Cell diversity and the use of microbes in food production

Each session will explore how these biological concepts are applied in Food Science and Nutrition, introduce related career opportunities, and conclude with a Q&A session with university students.

Join a Feedback Session

Judith is hosting a series of short online feedback sessions for teachers:

πŸ—“ Wednesday 9 July, 12:30 to 1:00 pm
πŸ—“ Wednesday 9 July, 3:15 to 3:45 pm
