Climate Detectives UK is a spin-off of the ESA Climate Detectives challenge, running for the first time this year. The competition is open to young people between 11-14 years old. Teams can choose to take part in Climate Detectives UK, or the ESA Climate Detectives.

This shorter, more focussed programme challenges participating teams with answering questions in one of several proposed research areas, using a range of tools and data carefully curated by ESERO-UK, with the help of climate experts at the Met Office.

Climate Detectives UK opens the possibility for teams to dive straight into the data and attempt to answer the questions posed, without the need to identify a research area of their own. Teams are then asked to think about how the issues identified by their research can be mitigated or solved, proposing actions they, and/or the wider public can take.

The timeline for the competition is as follows:

Registration open – now!

Research topics and data released – Thursday 28th October

Teams work with the data to answer research questions – Thursday 28th October - Tuesday 30th November

Reports submitted – Monday 6th December

Reports shared on the ESERO-UK Website – Wednesday 15th December

Participating teams will have the opportunity to engage with climate experts via the STEM Ambassador network. Once registered you’ll be kept up to date throughout the competition and be given the research topics and data when they are released later this month!

Register by Thursday 28 October here.
