The Times, DigitalEd- How Digital Tools can Enhance STEM Learning

By Kate Sutton posted 10-03-2025 14:05

A recent Times Higher Education roundtable, in partnership with DigitalEd, explored how digital tools are transforming STEM education by enabling more collaborative, personalised, and authentic learning experiences.

Key insights from the discussion included:

  • Personalised Learning & Assessment: Digital tools allow for tailored activities suited to individual pupil abilities, blurring the line between learning and assessment by integrating feedback loops (Joel Haddley, University of Liverpool).
  • Autonomy & Content Creation: Digital learning enables educators to develop their own teaching materials and assessments, making STEM education more adaptable and meaningful to students' fields of study (Amy Kimchuk, University of the Sciences).
  • Development & Efficiency: Prepared course materials, such as course outlines, help educators save time and focus on key areas for enhancement (Louise Krmpotic, DigitalEd).
  • Shifting Classroom Culture: Digital technologies encourage a mindset where pupils feel empowered to explore and refine their ideas, rather than just seeking correct answers. This mirrors how knowledge is developed in real-world STEM fields (Sibel Erduran, University of Oxford).

The discussion highlighted that while digital tools enhance learning, educators need time and support to effectively integrate them into teaching.

Thank you, Kate.  Brilliant.

I saw that there is a Microbit and Crumble 2-day residential in York, which I would be most interested in attending.  However, no dates are offered.

Do you have any information on dates? Or someone I could contact?

Regards,

Michael
