Celebrating Volunteers’ Week: Inspiring the next generation as a STEM Ambassador

Every year, from June 1st to 7th, the UK comes together to celebrate Volunteers’ Week- a heartfelt tribute to the millions of people who selflessly give their time and energy to help others. Launched in 1984, this annual campaign has grown into a nationwide celebration of kindness, community, and the transformative power of volunteering.

 The Heart of Volunteering

Volunteering is more than just an act of service- it’s a powerful force for personal and societal well-being. Studies have shown that volunteering can reduce stress, combat depression, and increase feelings of happiness and self-worth. Engaging in acts of kindness activates the reward centre in our brain, releasing feel-good chemicals like serotonin and dopamine, which contribute to improved mental health.

But the benefits extend beyond the volunteers themselves. Those on the receiving end of volunteer efforts often experience increased social connection and support, which are crucial factors in mental and emotional well-being. In essence, volunteering creates a ripple effect of positivity that uplifts entire communities.

Inspiring the Next Generation: The Role of STEM Ambassadors

In the realm of education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), volunteers play a pivotal role. The STEM Ambassadors programme, one of the UK's most impactful STEM support initiatives, boasts approximately 28,000 volunteers who dedicate their time to inspire young minds. By bringing real-world experiences into the classroom, STEM Ambassadors help students see the relevance and excitement of STEM subjects, often transforming their perceptions and aspirations.

One of the most powerful aspects of being a STEM Ambassador is acting as a careers role model. Many children and young people struggle to envision what a career in STEM actually looks like. By meeting professionals who work in diverse fields- from robotics and renewable energy to medicine and software engineering- students gain real insight into future pathways. These interactions can demystify complex career routes, challenge stereotypes (especially around gender and ethnicity in STEM), and provide a tangible link between what’s taught in school and the wider world.

Research shows that young people are more likely to engage with subjects and consider STEM careers when they can relate to and identify with the people in those roles. A visit or workshop from a STEM Ambassador can be the spark that ignites a lifelong interest, helping students build confidence and ambition. Being a STEM Ambassador is not just about teaching; it’s about opening doors, sharing passion, and showing the next generation what’s possible.

As we celebrate Volunteers’ Week, it's an opportune moment to reflect on the profound impact of volunteering. Whether it's mentoring a student, supporting a local charity, or simply lending a helping hand to a neighbour; every act of kindness contributes to a more compassionate and connected society.
