We are thrilled to welcome a Lego® model of the Soyuz space capsule to our Resource Centre at the National STEM Learning Centre! The model is 2.5m high, 1.6m diameter and weighs 800+ kg. It is approximately a 2/3 scale representation the orbital (docking) module of the Soyuz spacecraft and contains around 160,000 Lego® bricks.

The model was commissioned by the UK Space Agency in 2015 to coincide with Tim Peake’s Principia mission in December that year. It was built by Bright Bricks and first installed at the Science Museum, London.

The model later moved to Techniquest Science Museum in Cardiff. In 2019 the model was installed at Woolsthorpe Manor in Grantham, to contribute to their Principia display in celebration of the work by the same name, by Isaac Newton who lived there. In August 2021, the model was installed here at the National STEM Learning Centre.

This is the first of several updates to this display area of our Resource Centre, to highlight the work of ESERO-UK and the teaching and learning support ESERO programmes and challenges can provide.
