Apprenticeships with Altitude: Discover Engineering Careers with Virgin Atlantic

By Tim Bradbury posted 4 days ago

This National Apprenticeship Week, we’re delighted to be hosting Virgin Atlantic – Apprenticeships with Altitude, an inspiring online event designed to open young people’s eyes to the exciting world of aviation engineering and the many career pathways that apprenticeships can unlock.

From keeping aircraft safely in the sky to designing and maintaining complex engineering systems, aviation is powered by a highly skilled STEM workforce. This exclusive webinar offers students a rare chance to hear directly from those working at the heart of one of the UK’s most iconic airlines.

What is Apprenticeships with Altitude?

Apprenticeships with Altitude is an engaging introduction to Virgin Atlantic’s engineering apprenticeship routes and the careers they can lead to. The session will feature a live online panel of eight engineers who have either completed, or are currently undertaking, an Engineering Apprenticeship with Virgin Atlantic.

Students will hear first-hand about:

  • The career paths apprenticeships can open up

  • The skills and qualifications needed to succeed

  • The real-world roles engineers play in aviation

  • How apprenticeships can act as a genuine alternative to traditional academic routes

These engineers’ journeys highlight how apprenticeships can be a powerful gateway into long-term, rewarding STEM careers.

Why apprenticeships in aviation?

Aviation engineering combines problem-solving, teamwork, digital skills and hands-on technical expertise. For students who enjoy STEM subjects and want to see their learning applied in the real world, apprenticeships offer:

  • Paid, structured training

  • Industry-recognised qualifications

  • Direct links to employment

  • A clear pathway into high-skilled engineering roles

Whether students already dream of becoming engineers or are simply curious about future options, this event provides valuable insight into what’s possible.

Who can attend?

The webinar is open to:

  • UK secondary schools

  • Sixth Forms

  • Further Education Colleges

It is most suitable for students aged 13–16.

Schools only need to register once, and the webinar link can be shared across multiple classes. We recommend that one member of staff makes the booking on behalf of the whole school.

How schools can prepare

To help students get the most from the session, we recommend:

  • Visiting the Virgin Atlantic careers site to explore current apprenticeship opportunities

  • Watching related videos and reading about different roles

  • Encouraging students to prepare questions in advance for the panel

During the webinar:

  • Cameras and microphones should remain off

  • Questions can be asked via the chat or ‘raise hand’ function

  • If selected, students may be invited to unmute briefly to ask their question live

Proud to be hosting with Virgin Atlantic

At STEM Learning, we’re proud to be hosting this event and to be one of Virgin Atlantic’s charity partners, supporting their Passport to Change programme.

This partnership reflects a shared commitment to:

  • Widening participation in STEM

  • Breaking down barriers to high-quality careers

  • Supporting young people and career changers into meaningful aviation and engineering pathways

Together, we’re helping connect learners with real-world opportunities that can genuinely change lives.
