Have you ever heard of Farmer Time?

It's an initiative created by Tom Martin and Leaf Education. At our school we have worked with our farmer- Colin- over a number of years and collaborate with him across all our junior school year groups and a variety of science units of work. For example, Y3 Rocks and Soils: Colin amazed our pupils by explaining that there are more micro-organisms in a teaspoon of soil than there are people on our planet! He zoomed into our Y4 classroom from his self-driving tractor which the children loved. We went on to put together a soil jar and investigate the layers within it as the contents settled.

Try it yourselves.

Do any of you have other experiences of farmer Time or any hints for activities on National Soil day?

For key stage 3 students have a look at 'Farmers for Schools' from the National Farmers Union. You can book farmers to come in to your school to deliver an assembly - as they say " Students today are bombarded by misinformation, unsure if what they are being told is science fact or science fiction. Their choices around what they eat, where it comes from and the environmental considerations surrounding it are becoming ever more complex and confusing. Farmers for Schools can help."  Use this link to sign up Farmers for Schools

This links to Science, Food and Geography - a great cross-curricular topic.

Go on - book your farmer today!
