Discussion of the week (Primary): Dataloggers

By Tim Bradbury posted 31-05-2021 10:41

I'm going to use this week to highlight a great way in which this platform can be used, not only to share ideas about teaching but also to ask for help and ideas for sourcing teaching materials.

In this discussion @Carolyn Cameron is seeking some recommendations for dataloggers which could be used in primary school and has received some super feedback and ideas for consideration, however it also struck me that this might be the type of question that you might want to fire into the technicians group too... Technicians are a fount of knowledge when it comes to sourcing equipment, they may have contacts at suppliers where you might get some discount or if you connect with one local to you may even have a set you can borrow!

Thanks to @Katrina Halford, @Lucy Williams, @Sarah Zaman, @Helen Warsop, @Helen Cotton, @Sophie Mitchell and of course @Carolyn Cameron

I have used Data Harvest primary dataloggers for an outreach project with a group of yr3 and yr4 students (at a feeder primary), none of whom had any experience of dataloggers- and they loved using them. They collected data and then downloaded it to produce graphs and compared results between the groups which resulted in really stimulating class discussions.
The equipment and software was really easy for them to use after a brief intro and very hands on!
Our project was called 'Ship wrecked!' and we looked at the different insulating properties of materials and cooling curves.
There are free primary teaching materials on the Data Harvest website which can be adapted to whatever dataloggers you are using.
If your primary school doesn't have dataloggers your local secondary school may be able to loan you some and the scitechs may be able to help with STEM outreach - it's worth asking and great to build support links.
