We’re kicking off a new initiative in the STEM Community. Focus of the Month. Each month we’ll shine a spotlight on a theme that really matters to our members, share useful resources, and get the conversation going in the HOPE that you will come along and join us in the discussion.
For October, we’re starting with SEND in mainstream education. Every classroom is different, and supporting pupils and students with special educational needs and disabilities can feel challenging at times, especially in STEM subjects. But with the right approaches, it’s also a chance to unlock STEM to more young people and help them see themselves in these subjects.
To get us started, take a look at this article from STEM Learning: Supporting students with SEND in mainstream education. It’s packed with ideas on adapting teaching, balancing different needs, and creating a classroom where every learner can take part and succeed.
You’ll also find more on SEND, plus other timely content, in the latest issue of The Bulletin.
This month, we’d love to hear from you:
- What works well in your setting when it comes to supporting SEND in STEM?
- Have you got a resource, idea or tip to share with colleagues?
- What are the biggest barriers you’ve faced, and how have you tackled them?
Over the course of the month we will also be sharing:
- Further blogs from the education team and specialist consultants
- Practical ideas and resources from our resource centre team
- Adaptive equipment from our technician team,
- Mark Langley will be focussing on labs and learning environments
So what are you waiting for… jump into the discussion, share your experiences, and let’s build a bank of ideas that helps us all make STEM more inclusive.
