This is the final incremental blog in the Established Leader section of the Primary Computing Leadership Journey. The elements in this section are covered in more detail in the brand new whole day face to face course: Leading Primary Computing Module 3. Please click on the infographic below to navigate through the different sections and access all of the resources and training:

When you feel on top of computing in your school, or even if you feel like you’re almost there, that may be the time where you begin to have the capacity to support other schools and other leaders. Do you remember how you felt when you first set out as computing leader? What were the struggles? Panics? The things unknown that in hindsight you can say “I really wish I’d have known that back then!”?

These are the things you can help new leaders with. This leadership Journey has been designed to give at least a starting point and suggested journey for leaders so that they don’t feel overwhelmed by too much all at once. Help them to pick out what is important to them by sharing your own experience. It might be different in places, but there will be a lot of similarities and your experience and insights could save them a lot of time and effort in getting their own practice to where yours is today.

You could point them towards the NCCE and their fabulous Teach Computing website. You could suggest the Leadership Journey above as a great way to get started, and perhaps attending the Leading Primary Computing courses, module 1, module 2 and the new module 3 depending on where they are at. If they are in senior leadership positions, then this page might help them: Support for primary senior leaders or if they are computing subject leaders; Leading computing teaching in your school.

If they are really struggling as they set out on this wonderful journey, then they might need the 2 day comprehensive residential course: Help! How do I lead primary computing? Or they might benefit from reading all about leading computing in the tried and tested Computing At School - Excellent Computing in Every School: A Toolkit for School Leaders or they might prefer CAS: Leading Primary Computing: Reflections form the subject leader community

I hope for the day when primary schools will be getting together for computing moderation and triangulation exercises, where we can show each other what our pupils have been getting up to and whether we agree on our emerging, expected and exceeding examples. When computing becomes as much of a priority as it should be, I believe those kinds of exercises would be so beneficial and shed so much light on computing in primary; building confidence in teachers and leaders; giving us all insight and the opportunity to communicate how to improve and further our subject.

Let’s try and make that happen! If you have any ideas or feedback in general for the Primary Computing Leadership Journey, then please feel free to write in the comments below.

So, just because you’ve reached the end of the suggested journey, doesn’t mean it’s over! You can tell us in the comments what you’re going to do next, whether it’s to re-visit one of the other elements in more detail, or forge ahead with something new. For example, why don’t you have a look at our short course on AI in primary computing
